Materials science department was established in 1982, with a joint background of chemistry, physics, electronic engineering and computer science. There are three teaching and research groups in it, namely physical material, chemical material and physical elect-ronics. The undergraduate education of the department includes th-ree majors: physical material, chemical material and electrical sci-ence and technology, every year recruits about 100 students. Con-cerning the graduate education, we have two doctoral bases ( phy-sical and chemical material, physical electronics ), four mater bas-es (physical and chemical material, physical electronics, material science, information functional material and devices ), as well as two postdoctoral mobile station.

　　　We have 85 high quality faculties and staffs at the present, among which, 17 are professors ( 12 are doctor tutors) and 24 are associate professors. 20 of them, are under the age of 45 and have Ph. D degree from the Chinese or Foreign high institutions.

　　　There are four research institutes in it. They are: the material science researching center of Fudan, national microelectrical ma-terial and devices microanalysis center, advanced coating resear-ching center and nano-technology developing center, all of which are equipped with top-ranking research instruments such as SIMS 、 TOF-SIMS 、 FIB 、 XPS 、 TEM 、 SEM 、 SAM 、 STM 、 IC 、 AAS 、 LC and FTIR , to name just a few.

　　The research of our department is focusing on the fields as follows: IC fabrication process, high-density electrical packaging materials and process, nano electronics and nano optics, the dev-elopment of new coating materials, functional thinfilm materials and special devices, photoelectrical materials and devices, high performance engineering plastic and liquid materials, materials of Li ion battery, novel multiple materials and failure analysis and evaluation. With a joint effort of all the faculty and students, we have accomplish a number of national key research projects and other projects of different levels and have gotten a lot of achievements and awards.

　　We have put a great emphasis on the integration of knowledge and its application, research and the industrial development. We h-ave been long keeping cooperative relation with many famous un-iversities and companies, such as Georg.Tech., Maryland U, Moto-rola, Intel, Ford, Phillip, Samsung, Panasonic, Lucent, GSMC, Bel-ling, etc. and have come to a level that education, research and ind-ustrial development collaborate well with each other and benefit each other.

　　Meanwhile, our education still focus on the cultivation of stud-ent with high quality on all aspects. Thus we give full support to the development of student in fields of study, research, social practices, extracurricular activities and so on. The summer social practices sponsored by our students have gained high praise by the central committee of the League and the government of Shanghai .

　　Our graduates may go abroad for further education or work as researchers in high schools and research institutes, while others may show great potential in the jobs in world famous companies.
